What Is Tooth Whitening?Tooth whitening is a process that bleaches the teeth, removing it of stains on the enamel and dentin to affect a lightening of any discoloration present. A common tooth whitening procedure uses carbamide peroxide poured over a custom mouth-guard worn over the teeth. What Is Tooth Discoloration?Defining tooth discoloration depends upon its many causes and it is important to distinguish between an external and internal stain. external stains: tobacco, tea, coffee and juices like grape and apple, coffee, tea and tobacco internal stains: excessive fluoride (during teeth formation), aging, trauma, nerve deneration, tetracycline (while teeth are forming)Only professional whitening procedures such as the custom tray bleaching can remove both internal and external stains. Over-the-counter "tooth whitening" products like toothpastes only remove the external stains.Who Can Undergo Tooth Whitening?Anybody can benefit from a tooth whitening procedure. A certain procedure though may be less effective for some people. Patients whose teeth are stained by tetracycline may experience difficulty in achieving the desired whiteness. People with veneers, crowns or fillings may also experience uneven whiteness because these dental fixtures do not whiten along with the rest of the teeth. Can A Pregnant or Nursing Woman Bleach Her Teeth? It is recommended and dentists agree that a pregnant woman and nursing mother should avoid any teeth whitening procedure. The reason for this is theres no clinical studies done yet to find out the effects of the bleaching agents to a womans health if shes pregnant or nursing.Whys Are There Teeth That Do Not Whiten Evenly With The Rest? The sides of your teeth and the biting edges whiten more quickly than the rest. This is so because of the thicker enamel in these areas. Teeth with thicker enamel respond faster to the bleaching agent than teeth with thinner enamel. Continue with your whitening procedure and the whiteness will even out eventually. Is Tooth Whitening Safe? The most preferred tooth whitening procedure is the custom-fit tray bleaching that uses carbamide peroxide. This procedure, when done under the supervision of an oral healthcare professional or a dentist, is safe. Theres no danger of the bleaching agent harming your teeth and gums. It also does not damage the enamel or cause any tooth weakening. The only short term side-effect is tooth sensitivity which goes away quickly when the process is stopped. If your have any more questions that concern you but are not discussed in this article, consult your dentist. The more you know about tooth whitening, the more confident you will be of any procedure you will choose.
My mother always reminded her kids that people judge you by the company you keep. The admonition was meant primarily for my brother who tended to prefer the company of neighborhood rowdies the kids who ran around with their shirttail hanging out, their knickers not pulled up, their hair uncombed, and used inappropriate language like gosh and gee whiz. (Yes, yes, I know. But that was back in the Dark Ages.)She was right people do judge you by people with whom you associate. But in our contemporary culture, few people are concerned about the judgment of others. However, if you are at midlife, and you want to retain youthful characteristics and vibrant good health, the company you keep is very important for a reason rarely discussed. And that reason is this: We develop old thinking and behaviors from observation and emulation of old or older people we associate with most frequently. They could be family members, close friends, neighbors, or co-workers. And lets not forget the influence of archaic conventional wisdom and consensus thinking. Oldness is insidious and viral. You really have to watch what you allow into your head and adopt as your own.Does someone in your family insist on being catered to not because of an infirmity but because Ive done for others all of my life, and now its time for others to do for me? Grandma did it, so you do it, too. We should do for our elders, but not when elders are perfectly capable of caring for themselves. Its unkind and unwise to encourage dependence. If entitlement or other "old age" behavior causes unhappiness in your family, it can stop with you.Aside from family life, one of the best places to catch the oldness virus is in retirement communities or any living situation where you are in contact primarily with people your own age.Retirement communities, for the most part, are beautiful. They are quiet, well maintained and many offer amenities that can keep you going nonstop: Trips, classes, social and sports events, state of the art exercise equipment, music, arts, crafts, tennis, swimming, theater -- you name it. What more could you want if you are over 50?What you should want, and must want, if you are determined to Put Old on Hold is regular association with people of ALL ages and circumstances. If you are at midlife (50-55), healthy, and choose to buy into a retirement community, think about the environment you will be in for a very long time.In a new community that stresses active lifestyles, there will probably be many residents about your age. But what happens as time goes on? Assuming the community remains stable, there probably wont be too many younger people moving in over the years. You may consider that a bonus, but remember this: Over time, your closest friends and acquaintances will likely be those within the community, especially if your lifestyle becomes more settled. This is something to consider ahead of time. The life span has increased by 27 years in the past century. Those bonus years represent a long time to live in a situation where predominant topics of conversation, eventually, will be about aches, pains, which neighbor is in the hospital or who died last week, and which widower is up for grabs, and what his favorite casserole is. The reality is this: If you are at midlife and you choose to segregate yourself in a seniors-only environment, the oldness virus will get you sooner than later.Young people, as irritating as they often can be, can also be open, patient, kind, understanding and tolerant. For me, one of the joys of working is the opportunity to interact with young people. On more than one occasion, their presence has helped me lighten up on impatience and crankiness. You cannot pay for that kind of therapy!Exposure to young people is essential if you want to broaden your worldview and stay current with what is happening beyond your world and circle of friends. You may not approve of what you see and hear but it does help you cope with reality something that older people often have a hard time dealing with.Deliberately put yourself where younger people are. Take or teach classes at the local community college. Join organizations that do not segregate by age, i.e. seniors-only or boomers-only groups. Volunteer to mentor teens who could benefit from your wisdom and experience.Indeed, if you have a choice, choose your friends, associates and living environment carefully as you age. They can and do affect how well you age and the quality of your life.
Have you ever thought of your smile as a work of art? Cosmetic dentists often do, as they strive to create the perfectly proportioned smile."I believe there is an ideal proportion to teeth in the most naturally beautiful smile," says David Nusblatt, a dentist in Manhattan who often uses Lumineers to perfect his patients' smiles.Dentists such as Nusblatt are increasingly adopting Lumineers as the procedure of choice over traditional veneers. Lumineers, made from patented Cerinate porcelain, are painless and minimally invasive. The procedure, which requires only two visits to the dentist, requires no anesthetic or numbing shots.Unlike Lumineers, traditional veneers involve drilling or grinding of the teeth - often down to the nubs. Patients require an anesthetic for the process and painkillers for recovery. Because the sensitive tooth structure is destroyed, the process is irreversible. "Lumineers allows me to create a smile that is balanced and perfect for every unique face in the most minimally invasive way," Nusblatt said.Contact lens-thin, yet strong, Lumineers are proven to last up to 20 years. In most cases, the original teeth are left intact, making the procedure completely reversible."I have gone through life very self-conscious about my teeth and my smile," said Ben Ferrari of Nipomo, Calif. "From an early age I had an extremely large gap. With Lumineers I had an instant, beautiful smile. I was very amazed with the results, and to top it off, the procedure took only 40 minutes."Lumineers, named one of Dental Products Report's list of "Top 10 Products," can be used over crowns and on worn teeth to prevent further wear. In some cases, they also can be a convenient substitute for braces.
Most women have experienced itchy, watery eyes, often attributing irritation and allergic reactions to their cosmetics. But contrary to that belief, mascaras and eyeliners flaking and running into the eyes - not allergies - cause most eye problems. With this in mind, cosmetics companies such as Blinc Inc. uncovered new developments in eye makeup technology that have resolved these problems. Unlike most eyeliners and mascaras, Blinc's Kiss Me Mascara and Kiss Me Eyeliner are acrylic-based, which means they cannot flake, smudge, clump or run. Blinc's mascara and eyeliner are also free of damaging and irritating ingredients."The type of acrylic used in this eyeliner is also perfectly safe even in terms of allergy," Dr. Frances J. Storrs, a professor emerita of dermatology at Oregon Health & Science University, said in a Prevention magazine article featuring Blinc's eyeliner. Some ophthalmologists are even recommending Kiss Me Mascara and Eyeliner to their patients who have sensitive eyes, wear contact lenses or recently had laser eye surgery.Kiss Me Mascara forms tiny, water-resistant tubes around the lashes that can be removed with a combination of warm water and gentle friction. The similarly formulated Kiss Me Eyeliner creates a water-resistant layer of color on the lid that peels off with the mascara. No makeup removers are needed for these products. Also important for maintaining healthy eyes is replacing your mascara and eyeliner regularly; the beauty industry recommends replacing eye makeup every 90 days to avoid bacteria build-up.Similarly, cosmetics - especially eye makeup - should never be shared with others, as this can increase the spread of germs. Many physicians also recommend that you preserve the health of your eyes through antioxidant- and lutein-rich supplements. One such product is Super Antioxidant with Macular Protection by Clinician's Choice.
Hair threading is becoming more and more popular as individuals search for a new way to remove hair. The process can be done at home if you would like to or you can get a much better procedure done through a salon. For those that are looking for a new method of hair removal, besides all the waxing and the shaving, hair threading may be the answer for you. Although it is about as painful as waxing, it can help to remove the fine hair that grows over your body. You will use normal sewing thread to get the job done. The hair will be removed from the root. For an at home method, try this:Use two feet of sewing thread. Knot the ends to make a large circle. Hold it in both hands and wind it about ten times until it looks like a bow tie. The wound up portion needs to be in the middle. Now, spread the fingers of one hand so that the wound portion moves to the other hand. Practice moving it back and forth for a few minutes.Alternate the fingers that you move, spread and close.Practice first with your leg hairs until you learn how to do it well.Prop one leg up while you sit on a chair. Place the wound side of the thread on one side of the hair and lay the thread from the opposite end around both sides of the hair. Move your fingers as you have been practicing quickly. The hair is captures and pulled from the root.It is often wise to learn how to do hair threading by watching someone else do it. So, perhaps you should invest in a salon procedure the first time so that you can learn. Yes, it hurts a little and yes it is going to need to be done several times, but the process is one way for you to easily fight back unwanted hair. Once you learn how to do it, you will do it better. And, since there are no real risks of using hair threading there is no reason not to enjoy it.
